You might have observed on a dry day that when you touch the screen of a television on a computer monitor, you get a slight shock, why does it happen?

Explanation

Solution

To find the answer for this question first we need to understand why the television screen or monitor screen will create a slight shock for us when we touch it by hand. Also you have to know the concept of electrostatic force.

Complete answer:
When we touch the television or the computer monitor screen we will get a slight shock because the hair of the skin and the television screen get charged because of an electrostatic force.

We get slight shock when we touch the screen because the screen is negatively charged and the dust particle will fly near then the negative charge in the screen will induce a charge in the dust particle also pulling the negative charge close to it then the pushing of positive charge away.

The dust particle moves towards the screen which is negatively charged and the other is in positive charge. According to the inverse square law the force of attraction will be more than that of repulsion as the negative side will be close to the particle and the net force towards the screen.
So then the screen will attract the negative side and pull the dust particle to it.

In the screen the electric charge is collected and when we touch the screen by the hand, then the charge on the screen will dispense through our body and it will cause a slight shock for us.

Note: Uniform electric field intensity of 600kN/C600 kN/C will be produced on the television screen. A slight polarisation of dust particles will be induced only by the television screen. When we turned off the television we needed to allow discharge by cleaning to remove the dust mechanically.
