Chemistry Question on p -Block Elements

Xenon forms fluorides. Because 5d-orbitals are available for valence shell expansion.

A

If both Assertion and Reason are true, and Reason is a correct explanation of the Assertion

B

If both Assertion and Reason are true, but Reason is not a correct explanation of the Assertion

C

If Assertion is true, but Reason is false

D

If both Assertion and Reason are false

Answer

If both Assertion and Reason are true, but Reason is not a correct explanation of the Assertion

Explanation

Solution

Xenon belongs to noble gases which are considered to be very unreactive. In xenon atom, the ionisation potential of XeXe to lose one electron was found to be nearly equivalent that of O2O2++eO _{2} \rightarrow O _{2}{ }^{+}+ e ^{-}. Also, due to the presence of empty 5d5 d -orbitals, electrons can be excited and higher valency of xenon can be produced. e.g.XeF2,XeF4,XeF6e . g . XeF _{2}, XeF _{4}, XeF _{6} etc.
