Question
Chemistry Question on p -Block Elements
Xenon forms fluorides. Because 5d-orbitals are available for valence shell expansion.
If both Assertion and Reason are true, and Reason is a correct explanation of the Assertion
If both Assertion and Reason are true, but Reason is not a correct explanation of the Assertion
If Assertion is true, but Reason is false
If both Assertion and Reason are false
If both Assertion and Reason are true, but Reason is not a correct explanation of the Assertion
Solution
Xenon belongs to noble gases which are considered to be very unreactive. In xenon atom, the ionisation potential of Xe to lose one electron was found to be nearly equivalent that of O2→O2++e−. Also, due to the presence of empty 5d -orbitals, electrons can be excited and higher valency of xenon can be produced. e.g.XeF2,XeF4,XeF6 etc.
