Write uses of Bakelite.

Bakelite is the polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride compound and is probably the first plastic made from synthetic components. It is formed from the condensation reaction of phenol with formaldehyde.

Bakelite-
It is a thermosetting polymer. The formation of Bakelite is a multi-stage process involving heating of phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of catalyst such as HCl or $ZnC{{l}_{2}}$ or $N{{H}_{3}}$ . It can be moulded very quickly and is non-flexible. When the Bakelite is burned, it produces an uneven fishy odour.

Uses of Bakelite-
- Due to the characteristics of Bakelite, it is suitable as a moulding compound, binding agent and a protective coating. It is highly resistant to electrical, heat and chemical action. Thus, it was in particular demand for electrical and automobile industries.
- It is also used to make various kitchenware products such as frying pans, saucepan handles, etc. This also is used to make various jewellery articles and toys.
- Due to its high tensile strength, it is used for making many diversified products such as telephone wires, combs, pipe stems and firearms.

Note: Bakelite became more popular during World war II as it was used to make a variety of wartime equipment including pilot’s goggles, field telephones used for communication, buttons which were a part of British uniforms.
