Bakelite is the polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride compound and is probably the first plastic made from synthetic components. It is formed from the condensation reaction of phenol with formaldehyde.

Bakelite-
It is a thermosetting polymer. The formation of Bakelite is a multi-stage process involving heating of phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of catalyst such as HCl or ZnCl2 or NH3 . It can be moulded very quickly and is non-flexible. When the Bakelite is burned, it produces an uneven fishy odour.
Uses of Bakelite-
- Due to the characteristics of Bakelite, it is suitable as a moulding compound, binding agent and a protective coating. It is highly resistant to electrical, heat and chemical action. Thus, it was in particular demand for electrical and automobile industries.
- It is also used to make various kitchenware products such as frying pans, saucepan handles, etc. This also is used to make various jewellery articles and toys.
- Due to its high tensile strength, it is used for making many diversified products such as telephone wires, combs, pipe stems and firearms.
Note: Bakelite became more popular during World war II as it was used to make a variety of wartime equipment including pilot’s goggles, field telephones used for communication, buttons which were a part of British uniforms.
