Question

Question: Write three properties of Bases....

Write three properties of Bases.

Explanation

Solution

Bases are the chemical species which can accept protons, donate electrons or release hydroxide ions in aqueous solutions. They are substances which are slippery to touch, bitter in taste. They also turn red litmus blue and show pH more than77.

Complete answer:
We all have seen many examples of bases in our every day’s life, for example – detergent, toothpastes, soaps, baking powder etc.
Bases are those chemical species which can release hydroxide ions (OH)( - OH)in aqueous solution. They are the species which can donate electrons or accept protons. Some examples of bases are sodium hydroxide (NaOH)(NaOH), calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2)(Ca{(OH)_2}), ammonia (NH3)(N{H_3}), potassium hydroxide (KOH)(KOH)and calcium oxide (CaO)(CaO)etc.
The three properties of bases are as follows:
A) Bases change the color of red litmus into blue and they show pH more than 77 .
B) Bases react with acids to form salt and water. This reaction is known as the neutralization reaction.
C) Aqueous solution of bases which are also called alkalis can conduct electricity.
D) Bases are slippery to touch when dissolved in aqueous solution, for example soap solutions and are bitter in taste.
Let’s see some of the uses of bases:
A) Bases are used in the baking industry, detergent industry and manufacturing industry.
B) Bases used in bleaching powder and used for cleaning purposes.
C) It is also used in the manufacturing of soaps, detergents, toothpaste etc.

Note:
Also remember that bases are corrosive in nature. They have the tendency to corrode the surface of the metals. The term “alkaline” is basically used for basic solution but all the bases are not alkaline because all the bases are not soluble in water.
