Solution

Carl Linnaeus was a Swedish botanist, zoologist and physician. He studied sexual reproduction in plants at the University of Lund.

Complete answer:
Carl Linnaeus has popularity due to his works in binomial nomenclature, and his major contribution in taxonomy has brought him the name Father of modern taxonomy. His interest towards botany was drawn in his schooling; he learned to classify plants according to Tournefort’s system.

Due to his immense knowledge of classifying plants and animals into different species and groups at their minute details made him to write two important books which served as a template for other classification of taxonomic books for decades, he wrote Species Plantarum in 1753 and System Naturae in 1758.

The first edition of System Naturae was printed in 1735 in Netherlands with very minimum amount of information and the book consisted of about 12 pages only, as the information of taxonomy grew the knowledge of grouping them also grew and by the time the book reached 10th edition it consisted classification of 4,400 species of animals and 7,700 species of plants. Which was printed in 1758 and became very popular among biologists, botanists, and zoologists all over the world.

Note: After the era of Linnaeus his major publication System Naturae went into two different directions: Regnum vegetabile and System vegetablia by two other botanists.
