Question
Question: Write the names of the following compounds : Compounds| Name ---|--- \({H_2}C{O_3}\)| ...
Write the names of the following compounds :
Compounds | Name |
---|---|
H2CO3 | |
Na2O | |
Ca3N2 | |
K2PbO2 | |
Mg(HCO3)2 | |
Zn3(PO4)2 | |
Mg(AlO2)2 |
Solution
For this, one should know the basic names of the groups with which the metal is attached. Then, the name can be easily found out. The group (CO3)2−is called carbonate. Similarly, the groups with oxygen are called oxides, with nitrogen (-3) are nitrides, (PO4)3−are phosphates and with (AlO2)−are aluminates etc.
Complete answer:
The names of following compounds can be written as-
The first compound is H2CO3. The (CO3)2−has valency -2. The hydrogen has +1 in this compound. We know that (CO3)2−is carbonate and as there are two hydrogen. So, it is dihydrogen carbonate or bicarbonate. Commonly, it is called carbonic acid.
The next molecule is Na2O. The compounds of oxygen in which any metal is bonded with oxygen are called metal oxides. So, this is sodium oxide.
The other molecule is Ca3N2. In this, the nitrogen has valency of -3 and the nitrogen compounds with valency -3 are called nitrides. So, it is calcium nitride.
The next molecule is K2PbO2. In this two metal atoms are present. This compound in actual is as- K2[PbO2]. So, first we will write outer metal Potassium and then inner along with its oxidation state. So, the name would be Potassium lead (II) oxide.
The next molecule is Mg(HCO3)2. We know that (CO3)2− is carbonate. In this, one hydrogen is replaced with Mg. So, the name would be Magnesium hydrogen carbonate or Magnesium bicarbonate.
The next molecule is Zn3(PO4)2. Like (CO3)2− is carbonate, the molecule (PO4)3−is called Phosphate. Thus, this compound is Zinc phosphate.
The next molecule is Mg(AlO2)2. The group(AlO2)− is known as aluminate. Thus, this compound is called Magnesium aluminate.
In summary all the names are,
Compounds | Name |
---|---|
H2CO3 | Carbonic acid / Hydrogen carbonate / Bicarbonate |
Na2O | Sodium oxide |
Ca3N2 | Calcium Nitride |
K2PbO2 | Potassium lead (II) oxide |
Mg(HCO3)2 | Magnesium bicarbonate / Magnesium hydrogen carbonate |
Zn3(PO4)2 | Zinc phosphate |
Mg(AlO2)2 | Magnesium aluminate |
Note:
It must be noted that carbonic acid is said to some solutions that have carbon dioxide gas in water. This is also called carbonated water. Further, the nitride is used when the nitrogen is in (-3) oxidation state.
