Question
Question: Write the chemical equations for the following equation and balance them. \(Nitrogen + Oxygen \to ...
Write the chemical equations for the following equation and balance them.
Nitrogen+Oxygen→Nitrogenmonoxide
Solution
As we know that nitrogen is generally present as two atoms making one molecule of dinitrogen and same is the case with oxygen where it is present as dioxygen naturally and we also know that nitrogen monoxide include one atom of nitrogen and one atom of oxygen.
Complete step-by-step answer: As we know that one mole of nitrogen reacts with one mole of oxygen to produce two moles of nitrogen monoxide. And for balancing any chemical equation we have to balance the number of atoms on the left hand side and the right hand side.
Nitrogen+Oxygen→Nitrogenmonoxide
We can see in the above equation that nitrogen which is naturally present as a molecule given as N2 is reacting with oxygen which is again a molecule composed of two oxygen atoms which is given as O2. So when these two molecules reacts with each they will form nitrogen monoxide and in a balanced manner we can show the chemical equation as given below:
N2+O2→2NO
To confirm if the equation is balanced, let us count the number of atoms on the left hand side and right hand side.
Two nitrogen are present on the reactant side and two oxygen are present on the reactant side and the product side also possess two atoms or nitrogen and two atoms of oxygen. Therefore, we can say that the equation is balanced.
Note: Always remember that to balance a given chemical equation we can count the number of atoms present on the reactant side and number of atoms present on the product side and if the number of reactant side are more then we can add same number of atoms on the product side and vice versa.
