Write the balanced chemical equations for the following:
A. Phosphorus reacts with magnesium.
B. Phosphorus reacts with magnesium.
C. The action of ozone on hydrogen peroxide.
Solution
Balanced chemical equations are those in which the number of atoms on the reactant side is equal to the number of atoms on the product side. The balancing of the chemical equation is based on the principle of “Law of conservation of energy”.
Complete answer: or Complete step by step answer:
When phosphorus reacts with magnesium, there is the formation of magnesium phosphide Mg3P2.
The balanced chemical equation for the above reaction is written as:
6Mg+P4→2Mg3P4.
This chemical equation is balanced by Hit and trial method, which is shown below:
- First write the skeleton form of reaction as:
Mg+P4→Mg3P4
Then balance the magnesium on both sides by multiplying 3 on the left side as:
3Mg+P4→Mg3P4
Since Phosphorus is already balanced on both sides hence the reaction is balanced.
- When the flower of sulphur boils with calcium hydroxide i.e. quick lime then the formation of sulphur lime takes place. This reaction is carried out in the presence of surfactant. The sulphur lime formed as a result of the reaction is known as calcium polysulphide (CaSx).
The chemical reaction for sulphur with calcium hydroxide is written as:
3Ca(OH)2+12S→2CaS5+CaS2O3+3H2O.
- The action of ozone on hydrogen peroxide gives water and oxygen. This reaction involves the formation of hydroxyl radicals. This reaction is carried out at 25℃ and the PH range of 3 to 13.
The chemical reaction for ozone and hydrogen peroxide is given as:
H2O2+O3→H2O+2O2.
Note: The balancing of a chemical reaction is important because it tells us about the amount of reactant needed and also tells about the amount of product formed.
