Insects have evolved to have a number of adaptive mechanisms which helps them to thrive under habitats even in the ones with harsh or unfavourable conditions. They are found in extreme climatic conditions such as deserts and ice-covered polar regions. Some adaptations insects have developed are: the ability to camouflage by walking sticks, stinky bugs produce strong odour to escape from predators.

House flies have peculiar mouthparts to suck up food. And grasshoppers have really strong hind limbs to facilitate movement. And the animals have a thick and hard outer exoskeleton to withstand extreme atmospheric conditions. The presence of wings and other appendages also helps in free movements. And they also produce a large number of offspring and have an intermediate larval stage which helps in dormancy under unfavourable conditions. The appendages also help in walking, swimming, digging and even running.

Note: Adaptation is the mechanism by which organisms get adjusted to their environmental conditions. The mechanism of biological adaptation occurs when the animals alter their physiological functions. The humans under high altitude experience breathlessness due to a decrease in oxygen levels, but eventually adjust to it by increasing the RBC counts.
