William Harvey is known for discovery of
a) Blood circulation
b) Blood clotting
c) Respiration
d) Digestion
Solution
Hint:- William Harvey is an English physician. He recognised the functioning of the human heart. He isolated parts of the heart and made it to pump blood. This was the experimental demonstration of his discovery.
Complete Answer:-
William Harvey is known for the discovery of blood circulation carried out by the human heart. He isolated the arteries and veins present in the heart and applied pressure to visualise the flow of blood in the valves. He noticed that blood was pumped only in a single direction and the backflow of blood was prevented. His observation led to the discovery of blood circulation that we currently know of. Blood is pumped from the atrium into the ventricles with the help of valves which are present at the atrio-ventricular junction. These valves control the opening and closing of ventricles in order to allow the flow of blood. After the blood is pumped into the ventricles, the valves are closed so that they can prevent the backflow of blood. Oxygenated blood from ventricles is made to reach the body and tissues for the supply of oxygen and carbon dioxide is exchanged. The deoxygenated blood reaches lungs for the discarding of carbon dioxide and for the intake of oxygen is done which is then diffused into blood.
The correct answer is Option A. Blood Circulation.
Note:- The blood circulation in the humans is very systematic and the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood doesn’t take place. But in animals having a three chambered heart, mixing of blood takes place as they have only one ventricle that pumps out blood from the heart.
