We know that all matter consists of particles. Particles can be of various shape, size and properties. Matter exists in three states namely solid, liquid and gas. These states of matter arise due to the variation in the characteristics of the particles of matter.

Everything in the universe is made up of matter. All the matter is made up of particles. The size of particles in a matter is extremely small. Particles of the matter have spaces between them as during mixing the particles of one type of matter get into spaces between particles of the other. Particles of matter are continuously moving due to kinetic energy and this movement increases with the increase in temperature. Particles of matter have force acting between them which holds all the particles of matter together.
The strength of this force of attraction varies from one kind of matter to another. Solids have definite shape, fixed volumes, tendency to maintain their shape and are rigid. Strength of force acting between particles of solid is so strong which helps solid to have such properties. On the other hand, liquids have no fixed volume but have a fixed volume as they take the shape of the vessel in which they are filled.
Gas particles move randomly at very high speed due to the maximum free space between the particles and minimum force of attraction among them. Gases are highly compressible and gases show the property of diffusion maximum. As chair and sugar is a solid matter because of its fixed volume and shape. On the other hand, dettol is an antiseptic and is liquid matter. But smell is not a matter.

Remember that Solid state is a state of matter which has definite shape or volume. Liquid state has a definite shape or volume. The rate of diffusion of liquids is higher than that of a solid because the liquid particles can move freely because of greater space between them and lesser force of attraction between particles as compared to solid.
