The first recipients of the Ashoka Chakra were Major Dhan Singh Thapa, Naik Nar Bahadur Thapa, and Lance Naik Gopal Singh Gusain. They were awarded the Ashoka Chakra on January 15, 1952, for their exceptional bravery and gallantry during the 1947-48 Indo-Pak war.
