Dracunculiasis is the causative pathogen for the Naru disease. Basically, the infection is caused by the parasite Dracunculus medinensis. Commonly called Guinea worm disease, it is an infection yet preventable. It has been reported in countries like-Ethiopia, Mali and South Sudan in the year 2011.

It is a waterborne infection. The mode of infection is through drinking contaminated pond or standing water or spreadable from infected persons with guinea worm disease. The symptoms and the time period taken for the worm to emerge would be-1 year from the time a person starts to be exposed to contaminated people or drink contaminated water.
The female guinea worm appears in the human body mostly on hands and legs in the form of painful blisters. Other symptoms include- fever, swelling, pain in the area where blisters are present.
The treatment of this disease is not yet discovered as there is no drug or vaccine to prevent this infection. Once the worm is being inserted or found in the body in the form of blisters it can only be pulled out from the wound and wrapped with gauze.
By taking out each worm from the body everyday can take a long time like – months or weeks. It specially affects the poor communities of Africa where people are not aware of drinking safe water. They tend to neglect this factor of how important it is to drink purified water.

The life cycle of the parasite mostly starts from the moment it enters the body through water and the larvae being released by the female worm inside. The copepods in the stomach and they penetrate the digestive tract passing from the cavity. The next 10-14 months are crucial for them as they begin to grow into full-size adults. They can grow up-to 60-100 centimeters, almost the size of a wide and long cooked spaghetti noodle.
