Biology Question on Kingdom Plant
Which of the following statements is/are incorrect regarding bryophytes ?
Sporophyte is parasitic over gametophyte
Fertilization takes place in presence of water
Zygote undergoes mitosis to form embryoproper
Zygote undergoes meiosis to produces porophyte
Zygote undergoes meiosis to produces porophyte
Solution
In bryophytes the sexual reproduction is advanced oogamous type. Male gametes, the antherozoids, are motile and small whereas the female gametes, the eggs are large and non-motile. The fertilisation takes place in the presence of water. The zygote, immediately after fertilisation divides
repeatedly by mitosis without undergoing any resting period. The embryo is not liberated but is retained within the archegonium where it develops into a sporophyte. The sporophyte is physiologically and physically dependent on
the gametophyte. The sporophyte consists of foot, seta and capsule.
