d-1and2

Explanation

Solution

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make their own food in the presence of air, water and sunlight. It is important due to two reasons ie., it is the primary source of food on earth and it is responsible for oxygen that we need to survive.

Complete answer:
We all are familiar with the fact that plants make their own food through the process called photosynthesis, in which they convert light energy into chemical energy through cellular respiration that can be later released to fuel the organism's metabolic activities.
Although this process is performed differently by different species, the process always begins when energy from light is absorbed by proteins called the reaction sector that contains green chlorophyll pigments. In these pigments, chloroplast is present that is most abundant in leaf cells. These cells help in the process of food making as it stores sunlight that is utilised for storing sunlight in them.
During the process, plants take up carbon dioxide and water from the soil and air. Within the plant cells, the water is oxidised by which an electron is lost whereas carbon dioxide is reduced, which means it gains an electron. This transfers the water into oxygen and the carbon dioxide into glucose. The plant after this releases the oxygen back into the air and stores energy within the glucose molecules.
All green plants can make their own food due to the presence of chlorophyll pigment in them and it is the primary source of food for the animals as well as humans. Carbon dioxide being released by humans is taken up by the plant from the air that helps in the process of food formation. As a result, oxygen is liberated as a by- product.

So, the correct answer is “Option a”.

Note:
Jan van Helmont began the research of the process of photosynthesis in the 17th century when he carefully measured the mass of the soil used by a plant and the mass of the plant as it grew. Many scientists worked on it like Joseph Priestley, Jan Ingenhousz, Cornelis Van Niel and many others. So the credit for its discovery cannot be given to any one scientist.
