Biology Question on Classification Of Animals
Which of the following statements are correct? (i) venom of cobra is neurotoxic (ii) venom of sea snake is neurotoxic (iii) venom of viper is haemotoxic
(i), (ii), & (iii)
(i) & (iii)
(i) & (ii)
(ii)&(iii)
(i), (ii), & (iii)
Solution
Snake venom is of two types - neurotoxic and haemotoxic. Neurotoxic venom acts on the nervous system. It may affect the optic nerves or the phrenic nerves of the diaphragm. They cause death by paralysis of respiratory muscles and asphyxiation. The venom of krait, cobra and sea-snake is neurotoxic. The venom of viper is haemolytic affecting the circulatory or nervous systems more severely. They cause tissue destruction and widespread haemorrhage. Death may result due to paralysis of vasomotor centres and exhaustion from profuse bleeding.
