Which of the following statements are correct about voltaic cell?
I.Chemical energy is converted into electrical energy.
II.Electrons flow from anode to cathode.
III.Oxidation occurs at anode.
IV.Anode is negative and cathode is positive.
A.I and III
B.I, II and III
C.I, III and IV
D.I, II, III and IV
Solution
A voltaic cell is also called a galvanic cell or an electrochemical cell. It is based upon the redox reaction which is spontaneous in nature.
Whenever a redox reaction occurs directly in a single beaker, chemical energy is produced in the form of heat.
Voltaic cells are the devices which can convert this chemical energy into some other form of energy.
Complete step by step answer:
It is possible to bring about the redox reactions indirectly by suitable means so as the chemical energy is converted into electrical energy. Thus, an electrochemical cell or simply a chemical cell is a device which is used to convert the chemical energy produced in a redox reaction into electrical energy.
The redox reactions are allowed to happen in such a way that the oxidation half reaction takes place in one beaker and the reduction half reaction takes place in another beaker. Thus, the electrons given out by the former will be taken up by the latter and as a result, current will start to flow.
The electrodes are set up in two separate beakers. The electrode at which the oxidation process happens is called the anode and the electrode at which the reduction process happens is called the cathode.
Thus, the anode is rich in electrons and pushes the electrons into the external circuit and so it is taken as the negative pole. The cathode is deficient in electrons and pulls the electrons from the external circuit and so it is taken as the positive pole.
Therefore, the electrons in a voltaic cell flow from the negative pole to the positive pole, i.e., from the anode to the cathode in the external circuit.
Hence, all the statements are correct and so the correct option is D.
Note:
Electrolytic cells are different from the electrochemical cells. Electrolytic cells are devices to convert electrical energy into chemical energy.
Electrolytic cells are based upon the redox reaction which is non-spontaneous.
Here, both the electrodes are set up in the same beaker in the solution of the electrolyte.
In case of electrolytic cells, the electrode attached to the battery’s negative terminal is called the cathode. The other electrode is the anode.
