Which of the following is used for treatment of acidity?
A.Antibiotic
B.Analgesic
C.Antacid
D.Antiseptic
Solution
Acidity is also known as acid reflux. It is basically a condition which is caused due to the production of acid by the stomach which flows back into the food pipe and causes pain or burning sensation in the lower chest area.
Complete step by step answer:
An acid is any hydrogen-containing substance that is capable of donating a proton to another substance. Moreover, acidic substances are usually identified by their sour taste and they are known to turn blue litmus red. Now there are different definitions of acids according to different theories. According to Lowry- Bronsted definition, acid is a proton donor whereas according to Lewis definition, acids are molecules or ions which are capable of coordinating with unshared electron pairs.
Now, due to overproduction of acids, we feel irritation in the stomach which causes pain. This sometimes leads to ulcers in the stomach. So, to cure acidity, we use antacids. These are alkaline ions that directly neutralize the gastric acids of the stomach. Moreover, the substances such as sodium hydrogen carbonate or a mixture of aluminum and magnesium hydroxide are used as antacids. If the acid is not treated properly then in advanced stages ulcer formation takes place which can be life-threatening and the only cure to this is the removal of the affected part of the stomach.
Hence, option C is correct.
Note: Antacids are useful drugs but have various side effects. The version of antacids which contain magnesium may cause diarrhea whereas the ones which contain calcium or aluminum can cause constipation. Moreover, in long terms, the use of antacids may even cause kidney stones.
