Question

Chemistry Question on sulphur

Which of the following form of sulphur can be prepared by pouring liquid sulphur into cold water?

A

Monoclinic

B

Rhombic

C

Plastic

D

Colloidal

Answer

Plastic

Explanation

Solution

Allotropic forms of sulphur (i) Rhombic sulphur: It is prepared by evaporating solution of roll sulphur in CS2.\text{C}{{\text{S}}_{\text{2}}}\text{.} (ii) Monoclinic or Prismatic sulphur: It is prepared by melting sulphur in a dish and cooling till crust is formed. Two holes are made in the crust and liquid poured out. On removing the crust, colourless needle-shaped crystals of prismatic sulphur are seen. (iii) Plastic sulphur: It is obtained by pouring boiling sulphur in cold water when rubber like mass is obtained. (iv) Milk of sulphur: It is obtained by boiling milk of lime with sulphur and decomposing the calcium pentasulphide thus formed with HC1 when milk of sulphur is precipitated as white amorphous precipitate.
