Oxytocin is also referred to as the "love hormone" because it is involved in lovemaking, fertility, labour and birth contractions and the release of milk during breastfeeding. It makes one feel healthy, and it activates emotions and behaviours that are nurturing. In pregnancy, receptor cells that allow the body to react to oxytocin gradually increase and then increase a lot during labour. Oxytocin causes intense contractions that help the cervix thin and open (dilate), move the baby down and out of the canal of birth, force the placenta out, and reduce bleeding at the placenta site. The baby's pressure against the cervix, and then against tissues in the pelvic floor, induces oxytocin and contractions throughout labour and birth. So does neonatal breastfeeding.
During labour and birth, low levels of oxytocin can cause problems-
