Which element is obtained in the pure form by van Arkel method?
(A) Aluminium
(B) Titanium
(C) Silicon
(D) Nickel
Solution
Van Arkel is the method of processing the product by storing it in its reactive substance and eventually decomposing it into a pure metal. This device will be used to purify metals such as titanium.
Complete step by step solution:
The process is used to treat limited amounts of very pure titanium or zirconium wire. Impure metal Ti / Zr is a tube of I2, evacuated at 2500 C. Til4 is produced that leaves impurities vaporized. A white-hot tungsten filament falls down into the gaseous MI4. The impurities are left as it will not comply with iodine. A hot tungsten filament is used to vaporize the titanium tetra-iodide at 14000 C. The mist is broken down and the material is coated with solid titanium, which is replaced. The iodine is used again.
- For example, in the refining of Zirconium or Titanium, this method is used-
⇒Ti(impure)+2I2→TiI4(gas)+heat→Ti+2I2
- Titanium has the symbol Ti and the atomic number 22 as a chemical element. This is an attractive, silver-coloured, low density, and solid transition metal. Titan in water, aqua regia and chlorine is immune to corrosion. Through reduction, common alloys of titanium are produced. For examples, the reduction of cupric titanium (reduced by copper-added rutile), ferro carbon titanium (reduced by coke in an electric furnace), and mangano titanium (reduced by the use of manganese or manganese oxides).
Thus, it is clear that option C is the correct option.
Note: Titanium may be alloyed to produce strong , lightweight aerospace alloys (jet engines, missiles and spacecraft) with iron , aluminium, vanadium and molybdenum, military, industrial processes such as chemicals and petrochemicals, desalination plants, pulp and paper, automotive, farming (farming), orthopaedic and dental, and endodontic instruments, medical prosthesis.
