The cutting down of trees is known as deforestation. This deforestation is the consequence of overpopulation and industrialisation. The consequences or the ill effects of deforestation are-
- The trees help in holding the soil and prevent erosion. If the trees are not present, soil erosion will take place removing the top fertile soil and depositing it in the water bodies.
- Trees bring rain. In the absence of trees, the rain will not be formed due to which the fertility of the soil will be lost and the temperature of the earth will rise.
- If trees will not be there, the earth will become oxygen depleted.

Note: If trees are cut indefinitely then the ecological balance of nature would be disturbed. This will affect the life of every organism surviving on the earth. The change in the climate will lead to desertification.
