What made the peddler think that he had indeed fallen into a rattrap?

The peddler came to the realization that he should avoid strolling along the public road with the pilfered money in his pocket. Consequently, he ventured into the woods, continuing to walk without reaching the woodland's conclusion. It was only later that he discovered he had unwittingly walked into a trap.
