What is the structure into which the graafian follicle develops after ovulation called?
Solution
The graafian follicle is the fluid filled structure inside the ovary inside which the ovum develops before ovulation. It is surrounded by a layer of follicular cells, which remain with the oocyte following ovulation. It forms a mass of cells which promotes the implantation.
Complete answer-
To solve this question we have to know the development and stages of graafian follicle. There are 3 major phases of follicle development as follows-
Follicular phase:
During the follicular phase, the body secretes follicle-stimulating hormone to induce the production of ovarian follicles that contain eggs. One of these follicles will grow into a mature follicle capable of being fertilized, which is known as the dominant follicle which secretes estrogen. It breaks down the non-dominant follicles and stimulates the thickening of the uterus for implantation.
Ovulatory phase:
The ovulatory phase begins on about day 14 of a woman’s menstrual cycle. The luteinizing hormone secretion increases so as to facilitate the release of egg.
Luteal phase:
The luteal phase of the menstrual cycle is the time where the body prepares for implantation of a fertilized egg. The ovarian follicle releases an egg during the ovulatory phase, the opened follicle closes off, forming the corpus luteum.
Hence answer is after ovulation from the ovary graafian follicle develops into a yellowish body called corpus luteum, this then starts producing progesterone while continuing to secrete estrogen.
Note:
A corpus luteum is a mass of cells that forms in an ovary and is responsible for the production of the hormone progesterone during early pregnancy. Following the release of the egg and subsequent fertilization, the follicle seals itself off and forms what is known as a corpus luteum. The corpus luteum helps produce the hormone progesterone during early pregnancy.
