Question
Question: What is the scientific name of Tea?...
What is the scientific name of Tea?
Solution
Various biologists follow a definite procedure or criteria while studying these varieties of organisms which includes identification, nomenclature and classification. Their study is also facilitated by agreed principles and criteria set by biologists all over the world.
Complete answer:
First, we will understand the meaning of scientific names. It is the binomial name given to any species. It mainly consists of two words. The first word is the genus starts with a capital letter and it is followed by species.
When classification of tea was done, they were initially kept under species Camellia sinensis. The large leaf Assam tea plants were considered as the species of Sinensis and were included. However, later the botanists named the Assam tea plants according to appropriate ranks.
There are two major taxa of tea and they are assigned accordingly as Camellia sinensis for china plants and C.assamica for Assam tea plants. There was a third race which was a distinct race of tea and referred to as “camodiensis” or “Tran ninh” which was recognised as a subspecies of Assam tea plants.
We can notice the same in Sinensis. The names are generally taken from Latin languages, irrespective of their origin. It is a woody plant, closely related to ornamental bushes that have earned a place in innumerable gardens owing to their flowers and Sinensis signifying in Chinese origin.
So, the scientific name of tea is Camellia sinensis and Camellia assamica.
Note: All biologists follow internationally agreed and accepted codes of rules or principles while assigning scientific names to known or newly discovered organisms. Binomial nomenclature for the scientific naming of organisms was developed by Carolus Linnaeus.
