Question
Science Question on Electrolysis
What is the mass ratio of the gases collected at the anode and cathode?
Answer
The molar masses of hydrogen and oxygen are 2 g/mol and 32 g/mol , respectively. During electrolysis:
- For every 2 volumes of (H2), 1 volume of (O2) is produced.
- The mass ratio is 2 : 16 or simplified to 1 : 8.
