What is the function of the scrotum in male reproductive system?
Solution
As we know, Spermatogenesis is the process of maturation of primordial cells in the testis of male to form sperms or spermatozoa is known as spermatogenesis. As we know, the testis is formed of numerous tubular seminiferous tubules held together with connective tissue. The sperm is extremely small and only a few numbers in size but features a long tail or flagella.
Complete answer-
Scrotum is the sac present externally from the body and has a different temperature which varies from the body’s temperature as the temperature needs to be cooler than the inside’s temperature in order for sperms to grow and nourish. Scrotum holds the testicles inside which manufactures the spermatozoa.
The scrotum functions- are to hold the testicles in place and maintain the temperature of the testicles which are needed to be cooler than the inside body’s temperature. 35 degrees Celsius, the scrotum maintains the temperature of the testicles.
Testicles have a major role as they produce millions of sperms and the sperm body is divided into three parts: the head region which comprises an acrosomal reaction which enters directly to the zona pellucida of the ovum detaching itself from the neck.
Neck region in sperm lying immediately behind the head is the neck and before the middle piece. It consists of centrioles; one is a proximal centriole in the depression of the nucleus and does not cause any active function. Distal centriole attaches to the sperm tail starting from the tip of the middle piece.
Note:
The middle piece of sperm consists of mitochondria which provide energy to swim through the tubes to the ovum. Mitochondria contain oxidative enzymes and hence it provides mobility or strength for the movement of sperm. Gonadotrophic hormones, which are follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) of the pituitary gland, regulate gametogenesis. Puberty attains at the age of 14−15 in boys and 12−13 in girls, which starts the development and growth of sexual organs or gonads.
