IUPAC’s full name is International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. It is an association of chemical societies that represent the chemists of 45 countries. IUPAC is registered in Zürich, Switzerland. The administrative office of IUPAC is known as the "IUPAC Secretariat”, is in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, United States. Fostering worldwide communications in the chemical sciences is the primary goal of the IUPAC. To complete this task, chemists across all sectors use a common language. There are almost 1,000 chemists that are engaged on a voluntary basis in the scientific work of IUPAC throughout the world.
IUPAC is best known for its work that standardized nomenclature in chemistry and other fields of science, but IUPAC has publications in many fields including chemistry, biology and physics. IUPAC is governed by several committees that perform different responsibilities. Each committee is made up of the members of different National Adhering Organizations from the different countries. IUPAC committee has a long history of naming organic and inorganic compounds officially.
