Question
Physics Question on thermal properties of matter
What is the cause of “Green house effect”
A
Infra-red rays
B
Ultra violet rays
C
X-rays
D
Radio waves
Answer
Infra-red rays
Explanation
Solution
The earth receives the UV, infrared, and visible light that the sun emits. A portion of the solar energy is absorbed by the atmosphere and clouds, while the remainder is sent back towards space by the atmosphere and clouds. The remainder of the energy is then absorbed by the Earth's surface, warming it. The energy is subsequently transformed into heat. Now that this heat has been absorbed by the earth's surface, it is retained in the atmosphere and contributes to the planet's warming. We refer to this impact as the "Greenhouse Effect." Thus, the Greenhouse effect is brought on by infrared radiation.
