Question: What is temperature and how is it measured?...

What is temperature and how is it measured?

Explanation

Solution

Try to elaborate the definition temperature. Include important terms in temperature .Try to explain how to measure temperature.

Complete answer:
Temperature is a quantity used to determine the hotness or coldness of a particular place, object etc.
Temperature is the measure of average kinetic energy of a system .As the particles in a matter move faster its kinetic energy begins to increase which in turn increases the temperature of the system. Heat refers to the energy exchanged between two bodies of different temperature when they are brought in contact. Absolute Zero of a temperature is the lowest possible value of temperature below which no further removal of energy is possible.
Thermometers are mainly used for measuring temperature. .Thermometers use different scales to measure temperatures. Commonly used scale is the Celsius (C)\left( C \right) scale. Other scales for measuring temperature are Kelvin (K)\left( K \right) and Fahrenheit (F)\left( F \right). In science; mostly used temperature scale is the Kelvin (K)\left( K \right)scale.
The relationship between Kelvin, Celsius and Fahrenheit is,
C5=K+2735=F329\Rightarrow \dfrac{C}{5} = \dfrac{{K + 273}}{5} = \dfrac{{F - 32}}{9}
Freezing and boiling point of water is 0C0^\circ C and 100C100^\circ C in Celsius scale, 32F\Rightarrow 32^\circ F and 212F212^\circ F in Fahrenheit scale and 273K273K and 373K373K in Kelvin scale.
There are different types of thermometers. Commonly used thermometer is mercury thermometer. In a mercury thermometer heat from the surrounding is transferred into the mercury which will increase the energy of atoms .Atoms in mercury will begin to vibrate which in turn increases the volume of mercury liquid inside the thermometer .This process is called thermal expansion. This will lead to a rise in mercury level which gives us the measure of the temperature.

Note: Try to define temperature, Temperature scales and Thermometers. Write types of temperature scales then explain how the thermometer works.
