What is lake tapping? What is the benefit of lake tapping?

Explanation

Solution

Lake tapping was first carried out at Koyna Dam 13 years ago. This project resulted in the completion of the largest hydroelectric power plant in India. The water reservoir for this project was the Shivsagar Lake.

Complete answer:
A lake tapping is a process in which excavating a tunnel at the bottom section of the lake. Usually, Dynamites are used for blast purposes. Once the blast is done, water flows with great force and moves turbines to produce hydroelectric power.

There are various reasons behind the lake tapping. Some of them are listed below:
1.It is done to purify the lake water.
2.It is done to limit the lake water.
3.It is done to effectively drain out the lake water.

There are many benefits of lake tapping.
1.One of the major benefits of lake tapping is that it is used for the establishment of waterways for hydro-power.
2.It is used for making drinking water available and for irrigation purposes.
3.It is also used for the landing of oil and gas pipes from offshore fields.

Note: The Koyna dam project is established on four dams of which the major contributors are Koyna and Kolkewadi Dam. First of all, the water flows from the headrace tunnels situated below the reservoir. After that, it flows through the vertical pressure of shafts and reaches the underground powerhouses. After completing all these stages, the discharged water is stored in Kolkewadi Dam.
