Question
Question: What is electromagnetic energy?...
What is electromagnetic energy?
Solution
Electromagnetic energy is a form of energy that is reflected or we can say the energy emitted from objects in the form of electrical and magnetic waves that can travel through space or vacuum. And it is classified on the basis of their frequency.
Complete answer:
Electromagnetic Energy: In classical physics we can define electromagnetic energy as the flow of energy at the universal speed of light through a space or vacuum or through a material medium which is in the form of electric as well as magnetic fields that make up electromagnetic waves. Some electromagnetic waves are radio waves, visible light and gamma rays.
And here time varying electric and magnetic fields are mutually linked with each other at an angle of 90∘ and perpendicular to the direction of motion. It is characterised by its intensity and the frequation of the time varying electric and magnetic field.
Additional information: The light coming from the sun is a portion of the electromagnetic radiation. The sunlight takes about 8.3 minutes to reach Earth from the surface of the sun. And our human eyes can only see the electromagnetic energy which comes under the visible light spectrum.
Note: Keep in mind that electromagnetic energy is light and in other words we can say electromagnetic energy as electromagnetic radiation. It is also a self propagating energy. In our day to day life we came across so many electromagic energy crring waves such as visible light, X-rays, gamma radiation, microwaves and radio waves.
