Berhman's final leaf on the ivy creeper was a masterwork. Sue refers to it as a masterpiece since Johnsy was able to overcome her illness because this painting restored her will to live. Johnsy believed she would pass away when the ivy creeper's last leaf dropped.
However, Berhman painted a new leaf by spending a whole night in a strong storm. After being wet while painting, Berhman contracted pneumonia and finally passed away. But when Johnsy saw that leaf, he began to believe in himself and thought it was genuine.
She overcame her sickness after realizing she could recover if she so desired.
