What is another name for osteitis deformans?
Solution
Osteitis deformans is a disease of bone which is a very chronic disease that leads to the breakdown of bone tissue which leads to weaken the bone and make the bone more prone to fracture. Its name was put forth based on the name of the surgeon.
Complete answer:
Another name for osteitis deformans is Paget disease. James Paget who was an American surgeon has discovered this disease while his study on bone disorder therefore this disease has also known by his name.
Paget disease is caused due to tissue replacement and it leads to bone fragility. It is usually seen at the age above 40 and the commonly affected area is the skull, spine, leg and pelvis. In severe cases, the bone started to break down by normal hit also which leads to an easy fracture of the bone. In most cases, the symptoms do not occur in this disease but in some cases, they occur in the form of bone pain and deformities due to the faster replacement of old tissue from the new tissue. In the pelvis region, it causes bone pain, in the skull, it causes hearing loss and headache, in the spine, it leads to compressing of the nerve which can cause tingling pain or numbness in the limb and leg and it leads to arthritis.
Note:
This disease is more common in man as compared to women and it is most commonly found in countries like England, Scotland, Greece and Europe. Bone cancer due to Paget disease is very rare and it is seen only in less than one per cent of patients.
