Question
Question: What is accelerated eutrophication?...
What is accelerated eutrophication?
Solution
Many times, due to enrichment of the water bodies with nutrients and organic waste algal bloom may be seen. This process is sometimes sped up as a result of human activity like dumping and discharge of organic matter or domestic wastes into the water bodies.
Complete answer:
Eutrophication is the process in which a water body is overly enriched with minerals and nutrients that induce excessive growth of algae giving rise to an algal bloom. This process may even result in the depletion of oxygen in the water body due to the bacterial degradation of the algae.
This process may occur naturally, but sometimes it is accelerated due to human activities. Dumping of industrial wasters and discharge or domestic wastes that contain a lot of organic matter into the water bodies are examples of such activities.
Eutrophication is often induced by the discharge of phosphate or nitrate-rich detergents, fertilizers, or sewage, etc into the aquatic ecosystems. Lake eutrophication has become global adversity as a result of water pollution.
Note: -This process of accelerated eutrophication due to human activities is also known as cultural eutrophication.
-Cultural or anthropogenic eutrophication speeds up the process of natural eutrophication.
-Due to the clearing of lands for the building of towns and cities, there has been an acceleration of land runoff and more organic material containing nutrients such as phosphates and nitrate are entering the lakes and rivers, and then to the estuaries and bays.
-Extra nutrients are also drained into the water bodies through treatment plants, fertilizers, farms as well as untreated sewage in many countries.
