Question

Question: What is a solution?...

What is a solution?

Explanation

Solution

We have to know that mainly a solution contains two components and that is solute and solvent. The component which is present in smaller particles is known as solute and the component present in larger particles is known as solvent.

Complete answer:
We must remember that a homogenous mixture of two or more components is known as solution. The components which are present in the resultant solution are mainly divided into two and that is, solute and solvent. The component which is present in smaller particles is known as solute and the component present in larger particles is known as solvent. Hence, a solution is the homogenous mixture of solute and the solvent.
The solution is mainly divided into two types according to the number of components present in the solution and that is, binary mixture and tertiary mixture. If the homogenous mixture contains only two components, which is known as binary mixture. And the example is, mixture of sugar and water. In that, the number of components present is two and that is sugar and water. But in the second case, the solution contains more than two components. Hence, it is known as ternary mixture. For example, a mixture of sugar, salt and water. Here, the number of components present is three.
Apart from this, we can also classify the solution in to three different kinds like,
- Saturated solution
- Unsaturated solution
- Supersaturated solution
Saturated solution: At a given temperature condition, the exactly the required quantity of solute present in the resultant solution or solvent is known as saturated solution.
Unsaturated solution: the solution contains less than the maximum amount of solute that is capable of being dissolved is known as unsaturated solution.
Supersaturated solution: If the solution contains more than the maximum amount of solute that is capable of being dissolved at a given temperature is known as supersaturated solution.

Note:
We also remember that a homogenous mixture of two or more components is known as a solution and according to the number of components present in the mixture, the solution is mainly divided into two and that is, binary mixture and tertiary mixture.
