What important property did Mendeleev use to classify the element in his periodic table and did he stick to that?

Explanation

Solution

The arrangement of elements in a tabular form or vertical and horizontal column according to their property is known as a periodic table. Many scientists tried to plan the periodic table by using valorous properties of elements such as chemical property, atomic weight, atomic number, etc. as all the elements are not known from the initial so, scientists faced a lot of problems. So, many periodic tables came from time to time. Nowadays, the acceptable periodic table is known as a modern periodic table.

Complete step-by-step answer:
Mendeleev, the full name was Dmitri Lvanovich Mendeleev was Russian chemist. He classified the element in his periodic table according to the fundamental property atomic weight. At that time all the elements are not known. Only sixty-three were recognized at that time. So, during the arrangement of elements, Mendeleev faced a problem that all the elements were not getting arranged in a sequence if the atomic weight property was followed strictly.

So, after some study, he found that chemical properties depend upon the atomic weight. So, he took sixty-three cards and wrote a chemical property on each card then placed the cards with the same chemical property together in a vertical column. We found that cards with similar properties show a sequence of increasing atomic weight.

Therefore, atomic weight was the important property that was used by Mendeleev to classify the element in his periodic table and he was not stuck to that.

Note: During the formation of the periodic table, based on the study of properties of adjacent elements Mendeleev found the places where a different element should be placed but that was undiscovered at that time so he left the place for the undiscovered element. This was the merit of the Mendeleev periodic table. The demerit of his periodic table was that he was not able to finalize the position of hydrogen in his periodic table.
