What do you mean by sieving? Give an example.
Solution
We know that substances surrounding us are not in pure form. They are a mixture of two or more substances. There are many techniques of separation of components of a mixture, such as, handpicking, sieving etc.
Complete step by step answer:
-Sieving is a process of separation of components of a mixture of different sizes. This is done with the help of a sieve. In this process mixture is passed through the pores of sieve. The smaller sized particles passed through the pores of sieve while the bigger particles cannot. And that’s how separation of particles occurs.
-The tea strainer separates the tea leaves from the tea. This is an example of sieving.
Additional Information:
Now let's discuss some other methods of separation of mixtures, such as handpicking, threshing, winnowing, evaporation, distillation etc.
-Handpicking is the method in which we use our hands to separate the unwanted particles from the mixture.
-Threshing is the method to separate grains from the stalk. First the stalk with grains is dried. Then the separation of grain from stalk can be done by beating the dried wheat grains to the floor.
-Winnowing is the method to separate the husk from the grains after threshing. This process of separation is done with the help of blowing air. The wind blows away the light particles such as, husk on dropping the mixture of grains from a certain height and the heavier grains collected at one place.
Note:
The process of separation on the basis of the size of particles by a sieve is termed as sieving. The strainers we use in daily life separates the particles by the sieving process.
