Outside the ABO system, there are hundreds of antigens that may be attached to red blood cells. Some of these antigens are so rare that they are found in very few people. One of the world's rarest blood types is Rh- null. It is called the "golden blood". This blood type is distinct from the Rh negative since it has none of the Rh antigen at all. There are less than 50 people who have this blood type.

Type O positive blood groups are called the universal or golden blood donors and type O negative is called the universal gainer. It can be taken up by all the people with any blood group. In the US, the blood Rh negative is considered as the rarest, while O positive is the most common.
