1. The large size of the population: The population of the country is very large whereas, the land fit for cultivation is limited. This creates immense pressure on land and accounts for low productivity.
2. Improper irrigation facility: There is no proper irrigation facility in the country. Most of the crop farmers are dependent on the rain. The monsoon has an uncertain cycle. Sometimes, there are heavy rains and floods.
3. Lack of technology: There are no technologies used by the farmers of India. They are dependent on the outdated practices of growing crops. Due to this time and effort are wasted and the production is low.
4. Lack of proper infrastructure and institutions: The agricultural infrastructure and institutions of India are very underdeveloped. There is an unequal distribution of land resources. All this causes low productivity due to low diversification.
5. Reduction in the quality of the soil: The excessive use of the soil is rendering it useless slowly. Also, the excessive use of fertilizers is gradually decreasing its quality. If this continues, then the soil might become unfit for crop cultivation.
