Question
Question: What are the parts of a plant?...
What are the parts of a plant?
Solution
The plants are mostly multicellular organisms which are predominantly photosynthetic eukaryotes of the Plantae kingdom. Earlier, plants were treated as one of two kingdoms which included all living things which are not animals, and all algae and fungi were also treated as plants. However, all of the new definitions of kingdom Plantae excludes fungi and some algae, as well as prokaryotes.
Complete answer:
The basic parts of a plant include roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds.
1. Roots: These are the structures which anchor the plants into the soil and help in absorbing nutrients and water that is needed by the rest of the plant.
2. Stems: These are the structures which support the upper part of the plant. Various nutrients, water, sugar, and starches are transported through the stem. The process of Photosynthesis can occur in stems of some plants like cacti, celery, Asparagus, and bananas.
3. Leaves: These are the plant structures where the process of photosynthesis usually occurs—where food for the plant is made. The green substance called chlorophyll helps in capturing light energy and uses it to convert water and carbon dioxide into plant food and oxygen which is later utilized by plants.
4. Flowers: These structures are the reproductive part of a plant. Flowers often have showy petals and fragrances which attracts pollinators such as birds, bees, and other insects. The flowers have four main parts known as: petals, stamen (anther and filament), pistil (stigma, style and ovary), and sepals. After pollination occurs, they get fertilized and produce seeds in the ovary of the flower.
5. Fruits: These structures are the fleshy substances which usually surround the seed. The seeds are protected by fruits and fruits attract animals to eat them. This helps in the process of seed dispersal.
6. Seeds: These are the structures which contain plant material that can develop into another plant. The plant material here is called an embryo. The seeds have one or two cotyledons and are covered with a protective seed coat.
Note:
Photosynthesis is the process by which a plant produces its food using energy from sunlight, water and nutrients from the soil and carbon dioxide from the air. Pollination is the process of movement of pollen from one plant to another. For seeds to form in flowering plants, the process of pollination is necessary. After pollination, a flower becomes a fruit and seeds are present inside the fruit.
