Animals have an organized system to carry out the process of circulation and they are known as circulatory systems. The human circulatory system consists of a heart, a network of closed blood vessels and the fluid in which blood is circulated. The heart is a muscular chamber, placed in the thoracic cavity. It is surrounded by a double membrane protective layer called pericardium. It is four-chambered. The upper two chambers are called atria and the lower two chambers are called ventricles. The atria are relatively smaller than the ventricles. The wall between the left and right atrium is called the interatrial septum and the wall in between the left and right ventricle is called the interventricular septum. And there is 'atrio-ventricular septum', which separates the atrium and ventricle. The opening in the right atrio-ventricular septum is guarded by the tricuspid valve, while the left one is guarded by a bicuspid valve. There are closed networks of blood vessels, which circulate blood throughout the body after it is pumped by the heart. The blood and lymph are the fluid, which is circulated.

The circulatory system is mostly found in two types, such as the open circulatory system and closed circulatory system.
In open circulatory systems, blood passes through vessels into open spaces or body cavities called sinuses. This is found in arthropods and mollusks.
While in a closed circulatory system, blood passes through a close network of vessels. It is found in annelids and chordates.
