Question
Question: What are the negative effects of infrared radiations?...
What are the negative effects of infrared radiations?
Solution
Hint : Infrared radiations are very high intensity electromagnetic radiations. They can damage our skin and eyes as well. They also damage our environment as it is involved in greenhouse effects.
Complete Step By Step Answer:
Infrared radiation consists of wavelengths from 760nm to 1nm. Almost half of the solar energy reaching the earth’s surface is in the IR range. Heat is the form in which the IR radiations are transmitted.
Following are the negative effects of infrared radiations-
1. Greenhouse effect.
Infrared radiations are involved in the greenhouse effect. The exchange of radiations that is the reason for increasing Earth’s temperature is called the greenhouse effect. Some of the Gas molecules absorb thermal infrared radiations preventing it to escape into outer space. This causes the heating of Earth’s atmosphere causing global warming.
2. Eye damage.
People working in industries that expose them to infrared radiations for a longer period of time can experience eye damage. Human eye is sensitive to all the electromagnetic radiations, especially to the high intensity radiations. Exposure to intense electromagnetic radiation, that also includes infrared radiations, can damage the lens and also cornea of the eye.
3. Skin damage.
Infrared radiation also causes skin damage. As IR radiation transmits in the form of heat it can raise skin temperature. Lasers beams are composed of highly amplified electromagnetic radiations like visible, microwaves, infrared etc. Laser lights are extremely powerful, they can even burn a hole through metal so they can certainly cause damage to the skin.
Note :
Infrared radiation transmits in the form of heat. So generalise the damages that can be caused by heat. Radiations like UV, IR are in the sunlight so correlate the concept of damages caused by them. Although infrared radiations are also useful for us, we also read about the uses of IR radiations.
