Question
Question: What are the Homeostasis and Hormonal Feedback system....
What are the Homeostasis and Hormonal Feedback system.
Solution
The endocrine system plays a very important role in homeostasis because hormones regulate the activity of body cells. The release of hormones into the blood is controlled by different forms of stimulus.
Complete step by step answer:
Homeostasis is the ability to take care of a comparatively stable internal state that persists despite changes within the world outside.
The endocrine glands secrete different types of hormones depending upon the need of the organism. The number of hormones secreted should be accurate. The regulation of the number of the hormones and therefore the timing of its release is controlled by feedback mechanisms.
There are two kinds of feedback mechanisms - positive and negative feedback.
- Positive feedback: during this mechanism, the response accelerates after the feedback. The effect is further then intensified in the same direction. It helps in speeding up the method occurring in various body systems. It is the opposite of negative feedback.
- Negative feedback: This mechanism occurs when the information given by the feedback causes a reverse response. This occurs only when the body has to slow down or when it wants to completely stop a process.
For example Childbirth;
Uterine contractions occur during the initiation of labour pain. These contractions lead to the release of a specific hormone called oxytocin (from the pituitary gland), which intensifies the contractions. The contractions further stimulate the production of oxytocin and this cycle will stop only after the birth of the baby. This is an example of positive feedback.
Note: Hormones provide the best feedback mechanism. There is a positive feedback mechanism in which the hormone stimulates the production of itself, for example, estrogen before ovulation. There is also a negative feedback mechanism where a hormone inhibits its own production example thyroid hormone ( T4 ). Enzymes, vitamins and Ribozymes do not show such a feedback mechanism.
