What are the functions performed by the testis in human beings?

Explanation

Solution

It is the major organ involved in reproductive processes in human beings. This organ is associated with the production of male gametes in human males. It is the organ of the body which is present outside the abdominal cavity of the males.

Complete answer: The male genitals are inclusive of following:
a) A pair of testes
b) Epididymis
c) Vas deferens
d) Ejaculatory ducts
e) Seminal vesicles
f) Prostate
g) Bulbourethral glands and
h) Penis
The primary functions of testicles in the male reproductive system are as follows:
i) Production of testosterone (male sex hormone).
ii) Production of sperms (male gametes).
Each testicle comprises a series of thin tightly coiled tubules known as seminiferous tubules, which contain primordial germ cells and Sertoli cells. The origin and development of the sperm cells take place within seminiferous tubules inside the testes. Upon production, the sperm cell is transported to the epididymis of the testes through long seminiferous tubules for storage until it is ejaculated. Testosterone is the male sex hormone which is responsible for the stimulation of many physical changes during puberty. The process of production of sperms from primordial germ cells in the seminiferous tubules is called spermatogenesis.

Note: The scrotum which is found outside the body cavity is a sac-like structure which acts as a control system for the production of sperms in the testes. Temperature slightly cooler than the body temperature is required for normal sperm development. The loose tissues of the scrotum allow it to tighten and relax according to the temperature requirements for sperms.
