The word sessile is used when the particular thing resists any sort of motion. The flowers that lack the pedicel and are borne directly on the stem or peduncle are called sessile flowers.

Flower is the reproductive part of the plant.
Flower has following parts-
• Pedicel- the part of the flower through which the flower is joined to the stem of the plant.
• Sepal- green part of the flower which protects the flower in bud stage
•Petal- colourful part of the flower which attracts pollinators for pollination and also produces fragrance
• Pistil- Female reproductive part of the flower.
• Stamen- Male reproductive part of the flower.

Flowers which do not have all these parts are known as incomplete flowers. Example of such flowers are unisexual flowers (the one which have only one reproductive part, example flowers of Cucurbitaceae family)

• Flowers which do not have pedicels are known as sessile flowers.
• Sessile word means “resting on surface ” i.e. the flowers which do not move, since these flowers do not have pedicels they can not wave in air like other flowers.
• Sessile flowers can be found solitary or in an inflorescence( that is a group of small flowers).
• Inflorescence such as spadix and spike have sessile flowers.
• Sessile flowers which are born solitary are Achyranthus and saffron.
• Therefore, examples of Sessile flowers are Anthurium, Wheat, Rice and Saffron.

Note: Flowers which have all these parts are known as complete flowers. Examples of such flowers are- Hibiscus, Rose, Lotus, Marigold etc. Sessile flowers also complete flowers. Some sessile flowers have a small pedicel and they are known as Sub Sessile flowers. Also other than flowers, there are some leaves which are also sessile in nature.
