What is pollution? Pollution is an undesirable change in the environment. When any things such as light, sound and any chemicals are introduced artificially into the environment, it can cause pollution.
Water pollution:
When any harmful chemicals or dangerous foreign substances are introduced into the water bodies, it is called water pollution. Water pollutants include, untreated chemicals, pesticides, sewage, metals like lead or mercury.

Ways to reduce water pollution:
- Dispose toxic chemicals properly. Avoid them from reaching the water bodies.
- Do not pour fat and grease into the river.
- Report the water polluters. If you find anyone throwing the wastes into the water bodies, immediately report to the concerned people.
- Use phosphate free detergents and dish washers.
- Try to avoid usage of plastics. Avoid dumping of those plastics into rivers or seas.
- Sanitize the water bodies timely.
- Join a water conservation organization.
- Volunteer to clean ponds, rivers and beaches.
- Contribute to water conservation charities.
- Stop immersing ashes into the sea in the name of rituals.
- Stop people from throwing dead bodies into the river, sea, ocean etc.
- Do not drain your septic tanks or cellar drains into the water bodies.
- Plant more trees near the bank of the lakes and rivers.
