Question

Question: What are some examples of plants?...

What are some examples of plants?

Explanation

Solution

Plants are multicellular eukaryotic organisms that are primarily non-motile. These are eukaryotes that have a whole kingdom to themselves and show great diversity in mode of nutrition, reproduction, life-cycle, etc.

Complete answer:
Kingdom plantae is divided into two sub-kingdoms:
-Cryptogamae: plants devoid of flowers and seeds
-Phanerogamae: plants with flowers and seeds
Cryptogames are plants that do not bear seeds and thus reproduce by spores. Plants belonging to this group are classified in three phylums; thallophyta, bryophyta and pteridophyta.
-Thallophyta is the group of algae, they are autotrophic plants devoid of phloem and xylem. They reproduce asexually and sexually both, by non-motile spores and non-motile gametes respectively. For example: Cladophora , Anabaena.
-Bryophytes are known as the amphibians of the plant kingdom due to their extreme habitat, i.e. they live in both water and land. They reproduce sexually, using male sex organ (Antheridium) and female sex organ (Archaegonium). For example: liverworts, ferns and moss.
-Pteridophyta are sporophytic plants and are mostly terrestrial. They have a vascular system, i.e. xylem and phloem. For example: Azolla pinnata , Selaginella lepidophylla.
Phanerogams are also called seed plants as they produce seeds after reproduction by specialised structures. These seeds contain the fertilised embryo and nutrition for the early stages of germination and plant growth. They are divided in two phylums; gymnosperms and angiosperms.
-Gymnosperms are non flowering plants and their seeds are not enclosed in fruits, hence the name gymnosperm which literally means naked seeds. They are generally found in cold regions and have spine-like leaves. For example: conifers, cycads and ginkgo.
-Angiosperms are a group of flowering plants which are the most abundantly found fauna at present. These are the plants that grow the beautiful and fragrant flowers, which contain the sex organs pistil (female) and stamen (male). Their seeds are enclosed in fruits. For example: bamboo, orchids, cactus, etc.

Note:
There are about 3-5 lakh species of plants on Earth, diverse in every way possible. They are an important source of oxygen in the atmosphere and are an essential part of almost every ecosystem, from marine to terrestrial.
