What are some contraindications for IUD use?

Explanation

Solution

An intrauterine device (IUD) is also known as an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD or ICD) which is a birth control device that is inserted into the uterus to prevent any unwanted pregnancy. There are many different types of IUDs. These devices are inserted by doctors or expert nurses in the uterus via vagina.

Complete answer:
Intrauterine devices are ideal contraceptive devices for the female who wants to delay pregnancy or who wants a difference in age of children. It is one of the most widely accepted contraceptive methods in India. Although they are useful and effective they may cause side effects and contraindications.
Absolute contraindications for IUD use comprise the following:

  1. Pregnancy
  2. Significantly distorted uterine anatomy and uterine infection.
  3. Unexplained vaginal bleeding concerning pregnancy or pelvic malignancy.
  4. Gestational trophoblastic disease with persistently raised beta-human chorionic gonadotropin levels.
  5. Pelvic infection.
  6. Abnormal bleeding.
You can find the Contraindications to IUD or IUS use on product labeling or in the guidelines of many specialty groups and in directions from peer-reviewed articles. A condition should be listed or determined as a contraindication only if the risk of IUD/IUS use by a woman with that condition exceeds or increases her risk with pregnancy.

Note:
These intra uterine devices are presently available as –

  1. The non-medicated IUDs. Example- Lippes loop.
  2. Copper releasing IUDs such as CuT, Cu7, Multiload 375. And
  3. The hormone releasing IUDs such as Progestasert and LNG-20. IUDs increase phagocytosis of sperm and suppress the motility and fertilizing capacity of them. Hormone releasing IUDs makes the uterus incompatible for implantation and the cervix hostile to the sperms.
