The main group elements i.e. the elements from the s and p blocks are commonly known as the normal elements. They are 118 elements in total out of which some are normal elements, transition elements and inner transition elements.

As from the history, for the elements whose half life cannot be measured in femtoseconds; Mendeleev differentiated those into s and p blocks which are known as normal elements.
There are in general 4 blocks in which the elements are being categorised i.e. s-block, p-block, d-block and f-block. The first two block elements are named as normal elements due to their properties and occurrences.
The normal elements are also known as representative components. There are a total 92 natural elements.

Note: Do note that the normal elements are different from the transition elements in many aspects. The main difference can be set by the position they set in the periodic table i.e. normal elements are from s and p blocks whereas transition elements are from d-block.
